Do We Want Genetically Engineered Salmon on our Plates?

GE Salmon half Center for Food Safety

Have you heard of Frankenfish? It’s a name given to AquaBounty Technologies’ genetically engineered Salmon. AquaBounty Technologies is a small American biotechnology company that increases the productivity of aquaculture: creating fast growing specimens (such as salmon, trout, and tilapia eggs) by genetic engineering. It seems like something you’d hear in a science fiction novel. It’s real though, and their GMO fish has been in the making for more than 17 years. Their engineered salmon has been patented and goes by the name of AquAdvantage Salmon. These GMO salmon grow twice as fast as other farmed Atlantic salmon and therefore reach “market size” in less time. more…

Please take a few minutes to send an email or make a phone call to let the Senate know TODAY to that you want Genetically Engineered Fish that may be on our dinner plates to AT LEAST BE LABELED accordingly. Hopefully we’ll be able to stop GE Fish from being produced for our consumption to begin with, but in case it is approved, let’s at least have the option to know what is being packaged and sold to us so that we are able to make an informed decision on not feeding this to our families. more…

Agave, Honey, Stevia, Coconut Palm – the List Goes On…

agavaA few weeks ago I was at Whole Foods Market ordering a smoothie from their menu and asked for a modification of their listed ingredients, as I often do.  I asked that they use Honey instead of Agave and use Kale instead of Spinach.  Generally the same people take my order, and this time one of the Team Members asked me why I don’t use Agave… was it just the taste I didn’t like?  I stood there for a moment and really couldn’t remember exactly what it was.  I had Agave on my “pick something more…

chemicals in laundry detergents

Does the smell of bleach make you think that your clothes are “clean”?  Do you like that flowery scent?  I used to love that the warm, fluffy, soft feeling after the clothes were pulled out of the dryer.  A while ago I read about bleach, detergents and fabric softeners – laundering my clothes became a totally new ball game!

Detergents and softeners leave dangerous chemical residues on our clothes and skin, and toxic fumes in the air that we breathe. Fortunately, changing our cleaning products is one of the simple changes that we can make.

Over 600 laundry products, from 95 brands, were evaluated – a whopping 80% of them received D’s and F’smore…

Are Nuts Really Healthy?

Are you buying “raw” nuts that are not really raw?

Should you pay extra for Organic nuts?

And, why bother soaking them?

healthy living real food traditional foodSurprisingly, most of the nuts at the markets in the United States are not really “raw”, though they may be labeled as raw.  Almonds in particular are difficult to purchase raw because of a law that was passed in 2007 which required that California almonds be pasteurized before being sold in stores.  So, though you may be buying Almonds in a health food store or grocery store, that are labeled as “raw”, they cannot legally sell you California grown almonds unless they were pasteurized.

So, why are they marked “raw”?  It sounds like false advertising to me!  more…
